Simmons Radio: The Shark “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” or My Very Own Radio Show
Posted October 5, 2026 by Sofia Azuara
Testing, testing! 1, 2, 3. Are we on air?
If so, I’d like to share the experience of hosting my very own (and very first) radio show here on Simmons’ Boston campus.
Music is humanity’s greatest unifiers. Rhythm and sound are innate; things that make a hearth in the depths of beings. This is, at the very least, what I feel. You see, I grew up with the dad who loves his guitar. Isn’t that a classic picture? A father still in his work clothes sat with the instrument cradled against his chest (plucking and tuning and humming) until it became another limb, bathed in the warm glow of the lamp light. I grew up with a mother in love with words and the theatre. Spent car rides with her listening to titillating and probably too-mature radio segments on the way to school every morning. I grew up with a karaoke machine snug against the living room wall just biding it’s time until the next family gathering.
All this to say, I love listening to music. And I love, love, finding out all about the history of any given song.
I’ve met radio people in the past. I am quite close to radio people. By “radio people”, I mean people who have looked at an audio mixer at least once in their life. I was quite fascinated by this work. When I heard that all students at Simmons, undergraduates and graduate students, could join the college radio I felt a spark. Most clubs on Simmons campus are available to all students.
After submitting a radio show request, two rounds of DJ training led by executive board members are required to be completed before a person can officially begin hosting their show. I found the radio community at Simmons to be incredibly welcoming. Everyone was excited to hear what the show would be about, what it would be called, what kind of music or segments would be included. Beforehand, I was a bit nervous to go live on air. Despite my public speaking background, I was always able to see the people who were listening to my words. Broadcasting my voice was a whole new ballpark. Throughout the two trainings the executive board members were reassuring and the more I learned about the system the less worried I felt! I even learned that Simmons University Radio is a part of the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System and that students have won awards for their work on the channel.
My co-host, a fellow SLIS student in the Archives Management concentration, and I are both taking an elective course this semester called “Music Librarianship”. The opportunity to become a part of a radio archive is quite a fascinating thing for both of us. All of Simmons’ radio shows are recorded for both personal and Simmons’ records. While Simmons preserves the radio shows of the past and sometimes replays them while no one is live, I am able to share audio files of my radio hour to friends and family who weren’t able to tune in.
My co-host and I went live for the very first time on Wednesday September 30th, 2026. We had such fun putting together our themes (rain, back to school, and my dad’s birthday!) and curating a playlist around them. We walked into the studio and hit the switch to light up the “ON AIR” sign. We felt like real professionals sitting there with our headphones on, speaking into the microphones. One of the best parts was getting messages from family throughout the show, telling us how much they loved the songs we were playing. As two people who moved to Boston to pursue a Masters in Library and Information Sciences, this radio show is one more way we can connect to the people back home.
We can’t wait to do it all again next week! Make sure to tune into Simmons Radio: The Shark and listen to “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” every Wednesday from 3pm to 4 pm EST.
