Student Snippets A Window Into The Daily Life & Thoughts of SLIS Students

Welcome Back Everybody!

Hopefully everyone has had a couple of weeks to settle into the new semester at Simmons. We are so excited to have you whether you are a new or returning student! A few housekeeping things before we start. Over the summer break, Simmons has moved around a little bit. You might have noticed that you are taking classrooms in a different building or that your advisor’s office is in a new location, especially for the SLIS students. The new SLIS faculty offices are now located on the third floor of the Academic and Management building, go say hello! Check in with the front desk to enjoy the SLIS graduate student lounge in the back for a quiet space to study, read or just hang out. The Graduate Admissions office is now on the first floor of One Palace Road, but if you have any questions about your time at Simmons you should try the One Stop (still located in the Main College Building on the second floor) or the Center for Student Success on the first floor of Lefavour Hall. Don’t be afraid to ask or wander—the staff of Simmons is always happy to help.

The start of the semester has its ups and downs. Personally, it is the hardest for me. Coming back from a break to suddenly have to listen to a lecture for three hours may make your brain feel a little foggy, but don’t stress. Everyone is in this September groove, over-caffeinated themselves and wondering just how they are going to get all their work done. For new and returning students here is my advice: Make friends, form study groups, and get a planner. Personally, I find a physical one works better than a digital one, but whatever you prefer. Even though you might have less assignments at the beginning of the term, it will put you in the time management headspace! Most graduate students have busy schedules outside of classes so even a small reading can seem like a giant task. Divide and conquer if you don’t have a chunk of time to devote to your readings! Reach out to your classmates or professors for advice! And utilize the Center for Student Success if you feel like you need an extra boost for tutoring or study help. As the air gets a little cooler and the leaves crunch across the Fenway, it can be easy to get overwhelmed, but fear not! There is a great community behind you ready to help.
